Prelude

Welcome and Invocation

Invocation, Opening Verses and Blessing of Palms
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P Our Lord entered Jerusalem the Sunday before His death and resurrection. Centuries before the prophet Zechariah wrote:
C Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!

P Behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is He,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
C Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!

P Let us pray and ask the Lord to bless the palms we use to remember Him this day.
(Worshipers raise their palm branches.)
P O God, who through Your prophets foretold our King’s coming in humility: we give
You thanks for fulfilling Your Word. We pray that You would bless these palms to
remind us of the day He entered Jerusalem and was acclaimed Son of David and
King of kings by those who laid palm branches before Him.
C Bless us who bear them now, and grant that we also may hail Him as our
King; through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with
You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Palm Sunday Gospel Reading John 12:12-19, Mark 14:1-2, 14:10-15:20

Palm Sunday Gospel Reading L The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
12The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
16His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18The reason why the
crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”
L This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

GOSPEL OF THE PASSION: Mark 14:1-2, 14:10-15:20
L The Holy Gospel according to Mark, the 14th chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
The Plot to Kill Jesus
Nar: It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest Him by stealth and kill Him, 2 for they said,
Priest: “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.”
Judas: Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray Him to them.
Nar: And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray Him.
The Passover with the Disciples
Nar: And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to him,
Dis: “Where will You have us go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?”
Nar: And He sent two of His disciples and said to them,
Jesus: “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’ 15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.”
Nar: And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover.17 And when it was evening, He came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said,
Jesus: “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.”
Dis: They began to be sorrowful and to say to Him one after another, “Is it I?”
Jesus: He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with Me. 21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he
had not been born.”
Institution of the Lord’s Supper
Nar: And as they were eating, He took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said,
Jesus: “Take; this is My body.” 23 And He took a cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
Nar: And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus said to them,
Jesus: “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”
Peter: Peter said to Him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.”
Jesus: And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”
Peter: But he said emphatically, “If I must die with You, I will not deny You.”
Dis: And they all said the same.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
Nar: And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And He said to His disciples,
Jesus: “Sit here while I pray.”
Nar: And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And He said to them,
Jesus: “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”
Nar: And going a little farther, He fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He said,
Jesus: “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Remove this cup from Me. Yet not what I will, but what You will.”
Nar: And He came and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter,
Jesus: “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Nar: And again He went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer Him. 41 And He came the third time and said to them,
Jesus: “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going; see, My betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
Nar: And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying,
Judas: “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize Him and lead Him away under guard.” 45 And when he came, he went up to Him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed Him.
Nar: And they laid hands on Him and seized Him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them,
Jesus: “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture Me? 49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.”
Nar: And they all left Him and fled.
Nar: And a young man followed Him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Council
Nar: And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 And Peter had followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they found none. 56 For manybore false witness against Him, but their testimony did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against Him, saying,
C “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’”
Nar: Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus,
Priest: “Have You no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against You?”
Nar: But He remained silent and made no answer.
Priest: “Again the high priest asked him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”
Jesus: And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
Priest: And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard His blasphemy. What is your decision?”
Nar: And they all condemned Him as deserving death. 65 And some began to spit on Him and to cover His face and to strike Him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received Him with blows.
Peter Denies Jesus
Nar: And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, 67 and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said,
Girl: “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.”
Peter: But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.”
Nar: And he went out into the gateway and the rooster crowed. 69 And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders,
Girl: “This man is one of them.”
Peter: But again he denied it.
C And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
Peter: But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.”
Nar: And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
Jesus Delivered to Pilate
Nar: And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led Him away and delivered Him over to Pilate. 2 And Pilate asked Him,
Pilate: “Are You the King of the Jews?”
Jesus: And He answered him, “You have said so.”
Nar: And the chief priests accused Him of many things. 4 And Pilate again asked Him,
Pilate: “Have You no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against You.”
Nar: But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.
Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified
Nar: Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. 7 And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. 8 And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. 9 And he answered them, saying,
Pilate: “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”
Nar: For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered Him up. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12 And Pilate again said to them,
Pilate: “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?”
Nar: And they cried out again,
C “Crucify him.”
Pilate: And Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?”
C But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”
Nar: So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.
Jesus Is Mocked
Nar: And the soldiers led Him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 17 And they clothedHim in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on Him. 18 And they began to salute Him,
C “Hail, King of the Jews!”
Nar: And they were striking His head with a reed and spitting on Him and kneeling down in homage to Him. 20 And when they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the purple cloak and put His own clothes on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.

Sermon: Desires and Circumstances

Nicene Creed

Nicene Creed
I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen.
