Scripture Readings: Judges 13:2–7, Luke 1:26-38
Old Testament Reading Judges 13:2–7
(The angel of the Lord announces Samson’s coming birth: “He shall begin to save Israel.” Samson foreshadows Jesus’ work.)
L There was a certain man of Zorah, of the tribe of the Danites, whose name was Manoah. And his wife was barren and had no children. And the angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her,
P “Behold, you are barren and have not borne children, but you shall conceive and bear a son. Therefore be careful and drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, for behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. No razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb, and he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”
L Then the woman came and told her husband, “A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of the angel of God, very awesome. I did not ask him where he was from, and he did not tell me his name, but he said to me, ‘Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. So then drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’”
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Gospel Reading: Luke 1:26-38
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 1st chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
(The angel Gabriel announces Jesus’ coming birth to Mary. He shall be the Son of the Most High.)
L In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said,
P “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”
L But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her,
P “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
C And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”
P And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old
age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.”
C And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
L And the angel departed from her.
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Prayer of the Day
P Loving Father, when the angel Gabriel proclaimed the good news of the incarnation,
C the virgin Mary trusted Your Word and conceived the Christ Child.
P Help us to follow her example of hearing and believing Your Word
C so that Jesus is born in our hearts and we rejoice in His abiding presence both now and always;
P through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
C and forever. Amen.
Song of the Day: The Angel Gabriel
Sermon – The Child Who is a Virgin’s Great Son
Apostles’ Creed, Second Article
Creed Apostles’ Creed, Second Article
P What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping?
C This, this is Christ the King, the Father’s only Son, our Lord— who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead
—the Babe, the Son of Mary!

Confession and Absolution
P Gabriel said, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” God has now graciously favored us by giving us faith in the Son born to her. Let us kneel and seek His grace for Jesus’ sake.
Silence for reflection on the Word of God and our sinful condition.
P Father in heaven,
C we confess that, although You have declared us to be Your set-apart, holy people, too often we resemble the world around us in our speaking and acting. Instead of doing Your will as Your humble servants, we follow our own paths.
We trespass; we have sinned.
We cannot keep to the right way without Your aid.
Forgive us, Father, and move our feet to keep in step with the Holy Spirit, for the sake of Your holy Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ.
P Do not be afraid! You have found favor with God. Our heavenly Father sent His Son into human history and lived the obedient life for you. He also provided atonement for your sins in Christ’s shed blood. God has saved you, and so your faith and hope are in God. He declares you to be holy and free from condemnation, so you can to serve Him in joy.
Live according to this word from God: your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
