Welcome and Invocation

P I looked and, behold, a great multitude which no one could number,
C From every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues,
P standing before the throne and before the Lamb,
C clothed in white robes with palm branches in their hands,
P crying out with a loud voice,
C “Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!”
P Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?
C These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
P Who are these, clothed in white robes?
C These are the saints, the saints of our God!

Scripture Readings: 1 John 3:1-3, Mat 5:1-11

Gospel Reading: Mat 5:1-11
1Seeing the crowds, [Jesus] went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.
2And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
3“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
6“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Epistle Reading 1 John 3:1-3
1See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Prayer of the Day

T Celebrating Our Saints T
L Today we remember with thanksgiving those who, during the past year, have entered before us into the Church Triumphant. These sisters and brothers of ours we entrust to the arms of our loving God through our Lord Jesus Christ, for He has provided victory over death. Even as we grieve their passing, we have bright hope, for we will be all together again.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P God of all mercy and consolation, come to the aid of your people, turning us from our selfish desires to live for You alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that, attentive to Your word, we may confess our trespasses, receive Your forgiveness, and then grow into the likeness of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
C Amen.
P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination
P Gracious Father, have mercy on us.
C In Your compassion, forgive us our sins, known and unknown,
bad things done and good left undone. Fill us again with your Spirit so that we may serve You in newness of life, to the honor and glory of Your holy Name. Amen.

P See what kind of love the Father has given to us, dealing with our sins by giving His own Son to be the atoning sacrifice for them all. Christ took our curse as sinners so that we could have His blessing as God’s Child. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by His authority, I declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Beloved, you are God’s child!
C Amen.
