Opening Song: Here I Am, and I Have Come

Here I am, and I have come
To thank You, Lord, for all You’ve done;
Thank You, Lord!
You paid the price at Calvary,
You shed Your blood, You set me free;
Thank You, Lord!
No greater love was ever shown,
No better life ever was laid down.

You took my sin, You took my shame,
You drank my cup, You bore my pain:
Thank You, Lord!
You broke the curse, You broke the chains,
In victory from death You rose again;
Thank You, Lord!
And not by works, but by your grace,
You clothe me now in your righteousness.

[Refrain – repeat 2x]
And I will always love Your name.
And I will always sing Your praise.

You bid me come, You make me whole,
You give me peace, You restore my soul;
Thank You, Lord!
You fill me up, and when I’m full
You give me more ‘til I overflow;
Thank You, Lord!
You’re making me to be like You,
To do the works of the Father, too.
[Refrain]

Scripture Readings: 2 Cor 5: 11a,14-6:2 (NIV), Luke 2:8-20

Epistle Reading 2 Cor 5: 11a,14-6:2 (NIV)

11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
6 As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. 2 For he says,
“In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.”
I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading: Luke 2:8-20

8And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 10And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. 11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling
cloths and lying in a manger.” 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
15When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Prayer of the Day

L Almighty God, You are eager to bring us good news:
C that You have not sent a Judge, You have sent a Savior!
L You are not against us,
C You are reconciled to us!
L “Peace on earth and mercy mild”,
C “God and sinners reconciled!”
L The Bethlehem shepherds heard, believed, and got going
C making known what had been told them.
L Give us ears to hear, hearts to believe, and feet to get going
C taking the message of salvation to Suffolk County.
L through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, now,
C and forever. Amen.

Sermon Hymn – “Go to the World!”

Go to the world! Go into all the earth;
Go preach the cross where Christ renews life’s worth,
Baptizing as the sign of our rebirth. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Go to the world! Go into every place;
Go live the word of God’s redeeming grace;
Go seek God’s presence in each time and space. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Go to the world! Go struggle, bless, and pray;
The nights of tears give way to joyful day.
As servant Church, you follow Christ’s own way. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Go to the World! Go as the ones I send,
For I am with you till the age shall end,
When all the host of glory cry, “Amen.” Alleluia. Alleluia.

Sermon – Red Letter Challenge – Going

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [1 John 1:8-9]

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

Lord, I confess I have often disobeyed Your commands.
I have, at times, turned away from You, and also from those I love and from people I need to help. I find it easy to dwell on my own needs and close out the world around me.
This is sin. Forgive me, Father.
Connect me once again to the power of Your love and forgiving grace.
Free my heart  and open my eyes to see the needs of family, friends, and neighbors.
They need to know forgiveness in Christ, just as I do.

P    This is how God reconciled Himself to sinners: He did not deal with us as our sins deserve, but made His holy Son to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. And you are in Christ, because you were baptized into Him (if indeed you were baptized) and now trust Him. Therefore, as Christ’s ambassador, I declare to you God’s good news: He does not count your sins against you; you are forgiven.
C    Amen.
P    Going forward, no longer live for yourself, but for Him who died for you and was raised again.
C    Amen.

Closing Hymn: Build Your Kingdom Here

Come set Your rule and reign
In our hearts again
Increase in us we pray
Unveil why we’re made
Come set our hearts ablaze with hope
Like wildfire in our very souls
Holy Spirit come invade us now
We are Your church
We need Your pow’r in us

We seek Your kingdom first
We hunger and we thirst
Refuse to waste our lives
For You’re our joy and prize
To see the captives’ hearts released
The hurt the sick the poor at peace
We lay down our lives for heaven’s cause
We are Your church
We pray revive this earth

[Chorus]
Build Your kingdom here
Let the darkness fear
Show Your mighty hand
Heal our streets and land
Set Your church on fire
Win this nation back
Change the atmosphere
Build Your kingdom here we pray

Unleash Your kingdom’s pow’r
Reaching the near and far
No force of hell can stop
Your beauty changing hearts
You made us for much more than this
Awake the kingdom seed in us
Fill us with the strength and love of Christ
We are Your church
We are the hope on earth
[Chorus]
