Welcome and Invocation

Call to Worship

L    God is our refuge and strength,
C    an ever-present help in trouble.
L    Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
C    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.
L    There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
C    the holy place where the Most High dwells.
L    God is within her, she will not fall;
C    God will help her when morning dawns.

L    He says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”
C    The Lord Almighty is with us.

C  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Opening Song: Come, Lord Jesus, Come

Come, Lord Jesus, come (repeat 3x)

Fill this place (repeat 4x)

With Your love, Lord Jesus, come
Come, Lord Jesus, come (repeat 2x)

Fill this place (repeat 4x)

Scripture Readings: James 1:17-21, John 15:1-9

Epistle Reading                                                                                                                              James 1:17–21

17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

19Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness that God requires. 21Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

A    This is the Word of the Lord.
C    Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading
John 15:1–9

P    The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the fifteenth chapter.
C    Glory to You, O Lord.

[Jesus said] 1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2Every branch of mine that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.

P    This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C    Praise to You, O Christ.

Prayer of the Day

L    We are Your grape-branches, O God, our vinedresser,
C    branches growing out from Christ, the true vine.
L    And You tend us, not so that we would bear mere leaves,
C    but that we would bear fruit.
L    Lift us up and also prune us, Father – we trust You.
C    But especially, move us to abide in Christ;
L    help us to spend relationship time with Him.
C    Then we will bear the fruit You seek,
L    Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. He lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now,
C    and forever. Amen.

Sermon Hymn: In Christ Alone

Verse 1
In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

Verse 2
In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live.

Verse 3
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

Verse 4
No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

Sermon – Red Letter Challenge – Being

Response to the Word and Apostle’s Creed

L Forever, O Lord, Your Word is firmly set in the heavens.
C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.
L Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it.
C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.
L Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P Most merciful God,
C we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.  We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy Name, Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Closing Hymn: You Are my All in All

Verse 1
You are my strength when I am weak
You are the treasure that I seek
You are my all in all
Seeking You as a precious jew’l
Lord to give up I’d be a fool
You are my all in all

Chorus
Jesus Lamb of God
Worthy is Your name
Jesus Lamb of God
Worthy is Your name

Verse 2
Taking my sin my cross my shame
Rising again I bless Your name
You are my all in all
When I fall down You pick me up
When I am dry You fill my cup
You are my all in all
[Chorus]

You are my All in All
