Welcome and Invocation

Call to Worship

L This is the day which the Lord has made;
C let us rejoice and be glad in it.
L From the rising of the sun to its setting,
C  the name of the Lord is to be praised.

L  Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere;
C  I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
L  Make me to know Your ways, O Lord.
C  Teach me Your paths.
L  Sanctify us in Your truth.
C  Your Word is truth.

L  From the rising of the sun to its setting,
C  the name of the Lord is to be praised.

C  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Opening Song: Jesus Messiah

He became sin who knew no sin
That we might become His righteousness
He humbled Himself and carried the cross
Love so amazing love so amazing

[Chorus]
Jesus Messiah Name above all names
Blessed Redeemer Emmanuel
The Rescue for sinners
The Ransom from heaven
Jesus Messiah Lord of all

His body the bread His blood the wine
Broken and poured out all for love
The whole earth trembled and the veil was torn
Love so amazing love so amazing

[Chorus]

All our hope is in You
All our hope is in You
All the glory to You God
The Light of the world

[Chorus]

Jesus Messiah
Lord of all
The Lord of all

Scripture Readings: James 1:22-25, Matthew 7:13-14, 24-29

Epistle Reading: James 1:22-25 (GW)

22 Do what God’s word says. Don’t merely listen to it, or you will fool yourselves. 23 If someone listens to God’s word but doesn’t do what it says, he is like a person who looks at his face in a mirror, 24 studies his features, goes away, and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 However, the person who continues to study God’s perfect laws that make people free and who remains committed to them will be blessed. People like that don’t merely listen and forget; they actually do what God’s laws say.

A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel: Matthew 7:13-14, 24-29

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the seventh chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.

[Jesus said,]13“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. 24“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” 28And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Prayer of the Day

L The world seeks our attention, O God.
C Advertisements promise security. Politicians promise hope. The “self-help” section is spilling over into “fiction” and “how-to.”
L Save us from such shifting, insecure foundations, O God—
C “like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.”
L Give us the foundation of Your Word
C “like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
L For to build on any other foundation is truly folly—
C “and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was the fall of it!”
L But a life built on hearing Your Words and doing them is a sturdy life, indeed—
C “the rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”
L Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. He lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now,
C and forever. Amen.

Sermon Hymn: Step By Step

Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise you
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise you
I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days
(repeat)

And I will follow You all of my days
And I will follow You all of my days
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

Sermon – Red Letter Challenge – Introduction

Response to the Word and Apostle’s Creed

L Forever, O Lord, Your Word is firmly set in the heavens.
C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.
L Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it.
C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.
L Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P Most merciful God,
C we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.  We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy Name, Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Closing Hymn: Build Your Kingdom Here

Come set Your rule and reign
In our hearts again
Increase in us we pray
Unveil why we’re made
Come set our hearts ablaze with hope
Like wildfire in our very souls
Holy Spirit come invade us now
We are Your church
We need Your pow’r in us

We seek Your kingdom first
We hunger and we thirst
Refuse to waste our lives
For You’re our joy and prize
To see the captives’ hearts released
The hurt the sick the poor at peace
We lay down our lives for heaven’s cause
We are Your church
We pray revive this earth

[Chorus]

Build Your kingdom here
Let the darkness fear
Show Your mighty hand
Heal our streets and land
Set Your church on fire
Win this nation back
Change the atmosphere
Build Your kingdom here we pray

Unleash Your kingdom’s pow’r
Reaching the near and far
No force of hell can stop
Your beauty changing hearts
You made us for much more than this
Awake the kingdom seed in us
Fill us with the strength and love of Christ
We are Your church
We are the hope on earth  [Chorus]
