Welcome and Invocation

Call to Worship

L This is the day which the Lord has made;
C let us rejoice and be glad in it.
L From the rising of the sun to its setting,
C the name of the Lord is to be praised.

L Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere;
C I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
L Make me to know Your ways, O Lord.
C Teach me Your paths.
L Sanctify us in Your truth.
C Your Word is truth.

L From the rising of the sun to its setting,
C the name of the Lord is to be praised.

C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Opening Hymn: Living Hope

Verse 1
How great the chasm that lay between us
How high the mountain I could not climb
In desperation I turned to heaven
And spoke Your name into the night
Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness
Tore through the shadows of my soul
The work is finished the end is written
Jesus Christ my living hope

Verse 2
Who could imagine so great a mercy
What heart could fathom such boundless grace
The God of ages stepped down from glory
To wear my sin and bear my shame
The cross has spoken I am forgiven
The King of kings calls me His own
Beautiful Savior I’m Yours forever
Jesus Christ my living hope

Chorus
Hallelujah praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope

Verse 3
Then came the morning that sealed the promise
Your buried body began to breathe
Out of the silence the Roaring Lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me
Jesus Yours is the victory

Chorus

You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope
My living hope

Scripture Readings: 2 Peter 1:1-4, Matthew 8:5-10, 13

Reading: 2 Peter 1:1–4

1Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
2May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
3His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading Matthew 8:5–10, 13

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the eighth chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.

5When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, 6“Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” 7And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.

13And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Prayer of the Day

L O Christ, all authority is Yours, both in heaven…
C “I say to one, ‘Go’, and he goes.”
L and on earth.
C “I say to another, ‘Come’, and he comes.”
L You only have to say the word…
C “I say to my servant, ‘Do this’, and he does it”
L and it happens.
C Help us to have total faith in Your authority and word.
L Bend our hearts so that we align totally as Your servants
C living by Your very great and precious promises.
L For You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now…
C and forever. Amen

Sermon – Servants Possessing Precious Promises

Response to the Message – Hymn – Every Promise

1 From the breaking of the dawn
To the setting of the sun
I will stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
Words of power strong to save
That will never pass away
I will stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
For Your covenant is sure
And on this I am secure
I can stand on ev’ry promise from Your word

2 When I stumble and I sin
Condemnation pressing in
I will stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
You are faithful to forgive
That in freedom I might live
So I stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
Guilt to innocence restored
You remember sins no more
So I’ll stand on ev’ry promise of Your word

3 When I’m faced with anguished choice
I will listen for Your voice
And I’ll stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
Through this dark and troubled land
You will guide me with Your hand
As I stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
And You’ve promised to complete
Ev’ry work begun in me
So I’ll stand on ev’ry promise of Your word

4 Hope that lifts me from despair
Love that casts out ev’ry fear
As I stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
Not forsaken not alone
For the Comforter has come
And I stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
Grace sufficient grace for me
Grace for all who will believe
We will stand on ev’ry promise of Your word

Confession and Absolution

P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination

P Almighty God, our maker and redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.
C O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

P Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved.

Grant this, Lord, unto us all.
C Amen.

Closing Hymn: Forever

Give thanks to the Lord, our God and King
His love endures forever
For He is good, He is above all things
His love endures forever
Sing praise, sing praise

With a mighty hand and outstretched arm
His love endures forever
For the life that’s been reborn
His love endures forever
Sing praise, sing praise
Sing praise, sing praise

(chorus)
Forever, God is faithful
Forever, God is strong
Forever, God is with us
Forever

From the rising to the setting sun
His love endures forever
And by the grace of God, we will carry on
His love endures forever
Sing praise, sing praise
Sing praise, sing praise
(chorus 2x)
Forever, forever

Forever
