Welcome and Invocation

Litany for Lent
P O Christ, out of Your fullness we have all received grace upon grace.
You are our eternal hope;
You are patient and full of mercy;
You are generous to all who call upon You.
C Save us, Lord.
P O Christ, fountain of life and holiness,
You have taken away our sins.
On the cross You were wounded for our transgressions
and were bruised for our iniquities.
C Save us, Lord.
P O Christ, obedient unto death,
source of all comfort,
our life and our resurrection,
our peace and reconciliation:
C Save us, Lord.
P O Christ, Savior of all who trust You,
hope of all who die in You,
and joy of all the saints:
C Save us, Lord.
P Jesus, Lamb of God,
C have mercy on us.
P Jesus, bearer of our sins,
C have mercy on us.
P Jesus, redeemer of the world,
C grant us peace.
P God of love,
as in Jesus Christ You gave Yourself to us,
so may we give ourselves to You,
living according to Your holy will.
Keep our feet firmly in the way where Christ leads us;
make our mouths speak the truth that Christ teaches us;
fill our bodies with the life that is Christ within us.
In His holy name we pray.
C Amen.

Readings: Galatians 3:26-29, 4:4-7 (NCV); John 8:23-32

Epistle: Galatians 3:26-29, 4:4-7 (NCV)
26-27 You were all baptized into Christ, and so you were all clothed with Christ. This means that you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 28 In Christ, there is no difference between Jew and Greek, slave and free person, male and female. You are all the same in Christ Jesus. 29 You belong to Christ, so you are Abraham’s descendants. You will inherit all of God’s blessings because of the promise God made to Abraham…. 4 But when the right time came, God sent his Son who was born of a woman and lived under the law. 5 God did this so he could buy freedom for those who were under the law and so we could become his children. 6 Since you are God’s children, God sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, and the Spirit cries out, “Father.” 7 So now you are not a slave; you are God’s child, and God will give you the blessing he promised, because you are his child.
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel: John 8:23-32
P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighth chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
23He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” 25So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. 26I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” 27They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. 28So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. 29And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” 30As he was saying these things, many believed in him.
31So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Prayer of the Day

L Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning.
C Grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, and take them to heart
L that by the patience and comfort of Your holy Word
C we may embrace and ever hold fast the truth of our identity
L for we are nothing less than Your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. He lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
C and forever. Amen.

Hymn: God’s Own Child, I Gladly Say It

Sermon: Study Scripture

Apostles’ Creed

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life T everlasting. Amen.

Confession and Forgiveness

P Return to Me with all your heart, says the Lord, with prayer and fasting, weeping and mourning, with broken and contrite hearts.
C For the Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.

(Silence for reflection and self-examination)
P Merciful Father, You sent Your Son to save sinners, and I have sinned!
C I have failed to love, even those closest to me, preferring that others serve me.
I have neglected works of mercy,
as though disregard of others fulfilled my duty to them.
I have resisted Your word and the Holy Spirit’s guidance of my heart, presuming that I know better.
I have been enticed by fallen desires, rebelling against You.
O Lord, wash away my sin. Create in me a clean heart, and uphold me with a humble spirit which walks trustingly with You.
P How great is the mercy of God, that we would sin and He would give His beloved Son to die for it. But it’s true! For the sake of Him who died in our place, God does not count our sins against us. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
