Welcome and Invocation

Call to Worship Psalm 24 & Chr 29:14

L     The earth belongs to the Lord, and everything in it—
C     the world and all its people.
L     O Lord, who am I, and who are my people,
C     that we should be able to give as generously as this?
L     Everything comes from You,
C     and we have given You only what comes from Your hand.
L     Open up, you gates. Open wide, you aged doors
C     and the glorious King will come in.
L     Who is this glorious King?
C     The Lord All-Powerful— He is the glorious King.
L     Lord, I give myself to You;
C     my God, I trust You. C          Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy

Opening Song: Jesus Messiah

He became sin who knew no sin
That we might become His righteousness
He humbled Himself and carried the cross
Love so amazing love so amazing
[Chorus]
Jesus Messiah Name above all names
Blessed Redeemer Emmanuel
The Rescue for sinners
The Ransom from heaven
Jesus Messiah Lord of all
His body the bread His blood the wine
Broken and poured out all for love
The whole earth trembled and the veil was torn
Love so amazing love so amazing
[Chorus]
All our hope is in You
All our hope is in You
All the glory to You God
The Light of the world
[Chorus]
Jesus Messiah
Lord of all
The Lord of all

Scripture Readings: Proverbs 3:3–10, Matthew 6:19–24

Old Testament Reading: Proverbs 3:3–10

3Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you;
    bind them around your neck;
    write them on the tablet of your heart.
4So you will find favor and good success
    in the sight of God and man.

5Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not lean on your own understanding.
6In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.
7Be not wise in your own eyes;
    fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
8It will be healing to your flesh
    and refreshment to your bones.

9Honor the Lord with your wealth
    and with the firstfruits of all your produce;
10then your barns will be filled with plenty,
    and your vats will be bursting with wine.

A    This is the Word of the Lord.
C    Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 6:19–24

P     The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixth chapter.

C     Glory to You, O Lord.

    [Jesus said,] 19“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

    22“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

    24“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

P    This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C    Praise to You, O Christ.

Prayer of the Day

L Good and generous God, You are with us always.
C In each dark hour, You are here. In each bright hour, You are here.
L Grant the people of this church a deep and abiding awareness that all good things come from You –
C our health, our incomes, our jobs, our talents and our own generous impulse.
L Blessed by Your extravagant grace, may we show gratitude by extravagant sharing.
C When we are tempted to think of money as a private matter, remind us that You have specifically asked
L for part of what we are given to be returned to You as a sign that we believe in You,
C and as a tangible way for us to contribute to the work of Your kingdom.
L And further, help us to help each other in this grace of giving,
C for You are the lover of our souls and call us to nothing less than transformation;
L through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now,
C and forever. Amen.

Sermon Hymn: Here I Am to Worship

Light of the world, You stepped down into darkness.
Opened my eyes let me see.
Beauty that made this heart adore You
Hope of a life spent with You.

[Chorus]
So here I am to worship,
Here I am to bow down,
Here I am to say that You’re my God,
You’re altogether lovely,
Altogether worthy,
Altogether wonderful to me.

King of all days, Oh so highly exalted,
Glorious in heaven above.
Humbly you came to the earth You created.
All for love’s sake became poor.
[Chorus]

I’ll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross  [Repeat]
[Chorus x 2]

Sermon – Red Letter Challenge – Giving

P     Lord of all good, our gifts we bring You now
C     use them Your holy purpose to fulfill.
P     Tokens of love and pledges they shall be
C     that our whole life is offered to Your will.
P     We give our minds to understand Your ways;
C     hands, eyes, and voice to serve Your great design;
P     hearts with the flame of Your own love ablaze—
C     thus for Your glory all our pow’rs combine.
P     Father, whose bounty all creation shows;
C     Christ, by whose willing sacrifice we live;

Confession and Absolution

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [1 John 1:8-9]

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Closing Hymn: Step by Step

Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise you
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise you
I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days
(repeat)
And I will follow You all of my days
And I will follow You all of my days
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days
